Narrating Crime: Listening to Violence, Moral Legitimacy, and Amateur Justice in Chinese True Crime Podcasts

Between entertainment, journalism, and public discussion, true crime podcasts have emerged as a distinctive narrative space worldwide, also in contemporary Chinese digital culture. Rather than simply recounting criminal cases, these podcasts actively shape how violence is narrated, interpreted, and emotionally consumed. At the same time, the genre is largely driven by amateur creators rather than professional journalists or legal experts, raising important questions about public trust, moral authority, and audience engagement.On 24 March, Emily Tsang (MJ 2008), head of Young Post at the South China Morning Post, and Tom Grundy (MJ 2017), director and founder of the Hong Kong Free Press, hosted our students for newsroom visits.

Come watch with us the latest award-winning AI Films from Cannes’ World AI Film Festival (WAIFF) and Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF). We will showcase 2026 WAIFF's best action film, "A Dollar Story," and best AI animation film, "This is Me", and 2026 BJIFF's Best AI Feature Film, "Seven Fleeting Days," as well as the Best Short Film and Best Visual Design in the AIGC Short Film Unit, "The Talk of the Peony." SFM Hosts Talk with Hong Kong Superstar Nicholas Tse

On 2 April, at HKU's Lee Shau Kee Lecture Centre, Nicholas Tse, Hong Kong's star singer, actor, TV chef, and entrepreneur, drew a full crowd of 800. He was joined on-stage by SFM Director Professor Ruby Yang for a conversation that covered his culinary brand "鋒味Chef Nic", his latest song《推倒重來》| Evolution, and his entrepreneurship journey.

Media Imaginations of Sinofuturism

While Hollywood conjures images of the past, could China conjure visions of the future? And what kind of future would that be? Professor Jeroen de Kloet from the University of Amsterdam will explore the notion of Sinofuturism (Lek, 2016) by drawing on artworks by figures such as Lawrence Lek, films like Frant Gwo's The Wandering Earth, and platformed AI works emerging from China.

Mozi – Decolonial Insights and Critical Media Culture

Mozi (379-382 BC) is a long-suppressed philosopher, technologist, and activist in ancient China. In this talk, Professor Jack Linchuan Qiu introduces Mozi, the context of his work, and his school of thought – Mohism, which can shape how critical media, culture, and communication scholars understand today’s digital and social phenomena. The talk is timed with the 10th anniversary of the launch of “Mozi”, the world’s first quantum satellite, made by Chinese scientists and launched in 2016.

Shenzhen Bay Culture Square and SFM to collaborate in talent development for creative industries

Shenzhen Bay Culture Square’s Future Design Academy and The University of Hong Kong’s School of Future Media signed a memorandum of cooperation on higher education and cultural creativity. The new initiative is aimed at injecting new vitality into creative industries in the Greater Bay Area through talent development. The signing ceremony was notably attended by Qi Shufang (齊淑芳女士), Chief Human Resources Officer of China Resources Land; Felix Kwok (郭東杰先生), Chief Creative Officer and Deputy Director of Shenzhen Bay Culture Square; Professor Jay Siegel, Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Teaching and Learning) at HKU; and Ruby Yang, Director of HKU’s School of Future Media.
