‘VR Handwashing: Guardians of Cleanliness’ Project
In response to the Hong Kong SAR Government’s initiatives in promoting digital education and community hygiene, the School of Future Media of The University of Hong Kong has received support from the Health Bureau’s Health and Medical Research Fund (HMRF) to launch a research study on promoting hand hygiene using Virtual Reality (VR), which will be commenced in September 2026. The project aims to create an immersive and experiential learning environment through VR, enabling secondary students to explore innovative public health education while encouraging good hygiene habits.
The research team will provide three sessions of activities for participating schools during the 2026/27 academic year. The activities of each session include:
- Thematic Talk: Information and communication technology, artificial intelligent and public health
- Pre-test: Hand fluorescent lotion and ultraviolet (UV) light test on hand-washing performance
- VR Practice / Video Broadcasting:
Hygiene knowledge on hand cleaning - Post-test: Hand fluorescent lotion and ultraviolet (UV) light test on hand-washing performance
- Activity Evaluation: Completing post-activity questionnaire
This study requires follow-up evaluation of the effectiveness of the activity amongst students. The project schedule is outlined in the table below (the actual implementation date will be confirmed after liaising with the school):
| Date | Research Progress |
| Late September - October 2026 | 1st activity session |
| Two months after 1st session (November - December 2026) | Evaluation on the effectiveness of activity |
| February - March 2027 | 2nd activity session |
| Two months after 2nd session (June - July 2027) | Evaluation on the effectiveness of activity / 3rd activity session (per school’s request) |
This is a school-based project for Secondary 1 to Secondary 4 students (aged between 12 to 15) and no fee will be charged. Our research team will provide all required VR devices. We hope participating schools can prepare suitable venue for the activities and teachers may help us to collect questionnaires.
After the completion of the whole programme, as a token of appreciation, participated schools will be awarded a certificate of commendation and HK$2,000 book voucher. Students who completed the whole programme will also be awarded HK$100 gift voucher. We sincerely invite your school to participate and work with us to advance innovative education.
If your school is interested in joining this program, please contact our Project Coordinator Dr. Siu-lun Chow via e-mail chowcass@hku.hk. Our project team will liaise with your school three to six months before the programme commences.
