John Noonan

John Noonan's interests lie in the areas of English-language learning for the purposes of journalism, communications, and various forms of mass media. In particular, he is interested in experiential learning for Chinese and international students, and outdoor journalism with an environmental focus.

 

Prior to attending journalism school, Noonan obtained a TESOL certificate, and he has taught English-language media and communications to Chinese and international students for over 20 years. He developed Duke Kunshan University's first journalism courses and served as editor to the university's literary journal, Intersections. Prior to that, he was the director of Shantou University's (STU) Global Media Honors Program, where he taught for 14 years, served as editor of a local news website covering northern Guangdong, and ran an overseas reporting program to the country of Nepal. At STU, he was also the co-creator of a unique public service course, 走向山林, which combined media outreach and reporting and environmental protection efforts to proactively safeguard threatened tropical forest ecosystems in the Chaoshan region of China.

 

Noonan holds a B.A. in Anthropology from the University of Florida, a TESOL certificate from Trinity College, Edinburgh, Scotland, and an M.S. in Journalism from Columbia University.
