Chul Heo

Honorary Professor

Chul Heo is Professor in the Department of Film, Television, and New Media at the School of Culture and Creativity, Beijing Normal–Hong Kong Baptist University (BNBU) in Zhuhai, China. He is a filmmaker, media scholar, and educator whose work spans Korean cinema, documentary practice, transnational media culture, and emerging cinematic forms shaped by artificial intelligence and virtual production.

His films include The Return (2017), winner of the Golden Zenith Award at the Montreal World Film Festival, the documentary Ari Ari the Korean Cinema (2012), Mira Story, New Normal, and the AI-enhanced virtual-production film Twenty-Fifth Hour. His current creative and scholarly work examines how generative AI, virtual production, and changing screen formats are reshaping cinematic aesthetics, production practices, and authorship.

Before joining BNBU, he taught at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, Nanyang Technological University, Korea University, and San Francisco State University. He holds a PhD in Communication Studies from the University of Iowa and an MFA from Brooklyn College.
