Richard Allen

Richard Allen is Chair Professor of Film and Media Art at the School of Creative Media, CityUHK, where he was previously Dean. He was formerly Professor of Cinema Studies at New York University. His research interests lie in film theory, aesthetics, and poetics. His books include Projecting Illusion (1995), Hitchcock’s Romantic Irony (2007), and Storytelling in Hindi Cinema (2026). His new research is on Affective Piety and Melodrama.
