Synposis:

Released in October 2025 in South Korea, "Run to the West" is one of the country's first feature film to aggressively incorporate AI for its characters and animation effects, sparking ethical discussions about the future of acting.

The story follows a group of people who are stuck in limbo after near-death experiences and hounded by unearthly figures who decide whether they belong in the afterlife or the land of the living.

Ruby Yang

Oscar-winning director, HKU School of Future Media director and Professor

Biography
Academy Award-winning filmmaker Professor Ruby Yang joined the Journalism and Media Studies Centre (JMSC) in 2013 as the Hung Leung Hau Ling Distinguished Fellow in Humanities. In 2023, she took the role as the JMSC director for 2 years and later become the director of the School of Future Media on 1 October 2025.
As a filmmaker and teacher, Ruby has inspired students from Hong Kong and beyond, elevating the art of storytelling both in journalism and filmmaking.

Ulrich Gaulke

Award-winning filmmaker, AI creative director and senior lecturer, HKU School of Future Media

Biography
At the HKU School of Future Media, Uli teaches courses such as Generative AI in Media Applications, Documentary Video Production and Documentary Film Appreciation. He received the Social Science Outstanding Teaching Award 2023 from the University of Hong Kong.

Yunsung Kang

Film and TV director, S.Korea

Biography
Born in 1971, Kang discovered his passion for cinema as a teenager. His interest grew through his university film club, and after seeing Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs, he decided to become a director. He made his first short film in 1996, then studied filmmaking in San Francisco.
Returning to Korea, Kang worked as assistant director and produced videos until his feature debut The Outlaws (2017) starring Don Lee became a major hit. The film won him several Best New Director awards and led to other film projects, followed by the famous Disney+ series Casino (2022).

Hansl Kwon

CEO and director, Studio Freewillusion Inc., S. Korea, a Seoul-based AI media technology startup

Biography
Kwon is the founder and CEO of Studio Freewillusion, a company launched in June 2023 and reported as Korea's first AI video tech studio. Within its first year, the company debut project One More Pumpkin, won the Grand Prize (Best Film) and Audience Choice Award (2024) at Dubai International AI Film Festival. In 2025, he served as the AI director for Run To The West, the first AI feature film in South Korea.

Janet Yang

President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, 2022-2025

Biography
An Emmy and Golden Globe-winning Hollywood producer, Yang recently completed three one-year terms as President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She is the first Asian American to hold this position. Yang came to prominence through her collaboration with Steven Spielberg on “Empire of the Sun,” followed by a long partnership with Oliver Stone, serving as Executive Producer of "The Joy Luck Club" and Producer of "The People vs. Larry Flynt."
Yang is a co-founder of GoldHouse, serves on the board of IMAX China, Forbes APEX, and Asia Society Southern California’s Advisory Council. She was named one of the "50 Most Powerful Women in Hollywood" by The Hollywood Reporter.

Jie Yang

Co-founder and CTO, Utopai Studios, an AI-native film and TV production company headquartered in California, USA

Biography
Jie Yang is co-founder and CTO of Utopai Studios. He leads research, engineering, and technical artist teams developing generative models, cinematic media generation, and multimodal agent systems for end-to-end cinematic production.

Previously, he served on the founding team and as Head of Research at Mineral, an Alphabet company incubated at Google Research and Google X, advancing AI systems including multimodal LLMs, multi-agent frameworks, robotic perception, and ML training pipelines.
