From the Director of HKU School of Future Media
The world of media is evolving at a breathtaking pace. At times, it may feel as though the very craft of storytelling is being rewritten. Yet amid this rapid transformation, one truth remains unchanged: the tools evolve, but the human heart of a story does not.
I still remember holding my first hand-wound 16mm Bolex camera—the weight of it in my hands, the rhythm of winding it, the quiet magic of film running through a Moviola. The technology was different, but the intention was the same as yours today: to connect, to reveal something true about the human experience, to help others feel and see differently.
You are entering this craft at a remarkable moment—where timeless narrative meets AI, immersive media, and technologies still taking shape. This brings both extraordinary opportunity and profound responsibility. Don’t simply adopt new tools—question them. Explore their boundaries. Use them not for novelty, but to tell stories that matter. Your voices are essential. You will expand storytelling in ways we cannot yet imagine—creating work that inspires, challenges, and builds bridges across cultures.
Our curriculum reflects this moment of convergence. It spans the full breadth of modern media creation, uniting the foundational principles of journalism with the frontiers of emerging technology. You will develop skills for careers in journalism and documentary filmmaking—across video, broadcast, online, and print—while also exploring new forms of AI-assisted content creation. You will learn from award-winning filmmakers and leading scholars, collaborate across disciplines, and gain real-world experience through hands-on projects and internships. Most importantly, you will graduate not only with a strong portfolio, but with the vision and moral compass to use your skills with integrity and purpose.

My hope is that you find here not just an education, but a creative home—a community that nurtures your imagination, supports your ambitions, and strengthens your voice. A place where your ideas grow into stories that leave a lasting mark on the world.
I look forward, as both a teacher and a fellow storyteller, to witnessing the stories you will tell and the impact you will make.
